Gumtree vs DealFish
PLEASE NOTE: DealFish changed their name to Kalahari Ads – http://www.kalahariads.net/
I recently had the opportunity to promote a new free classifieds web site as an affiliate. I must say that before the affiliate campaign was launched I did not even know about DealFish (the new site)
I nether understood why people rave about Gumtree and why Gumtree was the third busiest web site in South Africa. But they must be doing something right because everybody use them. Personally I do not like it at all.
So I am very happy that there is an alternative to Gumtree.
Both sites are rather easy to use and it is easy to register and place an ad.
On the searching and browsing side I prefer DealFish purely because they do not have all the Google Adsense ads between the real ads. I find the Google ads on Gumtree very confusing and I guess they do not mind that their users confuse the adsense ads with the actual listed ads. Each time when a user accidentally click on the Google ad instead of the real ad they get paid for it, so would it bother them?
I cannot understand how google can allow Gumtree to place these ads because Google’s terms clearly state that you are not allowed to incorporate Adsense ads on your site in such a way that your users will confuse it with the real content on your site. But Google love Gumtree so much that Gumtree is a premium publisher with Adsense.
Maybe it’s got something to do with the fact that Gumtree is owned by a big UK Based company called Gumtree.com Limited which is a subsidiary of eBay.
So, Gumtree is not even a South African based company, yet millions of South Africans helps it to be one of the top sites in our country and the money people pay to upgrade their ads (bump to the top) of course goes out of the country.
This is another reason why I am glad that there is an alternative in the market. Dealfish on the other hand is owned by MIH Group which is owned by Naspers (who also owns Media24). So at least DealFish is owned by a local company and there are real people working on the web site in their offices in Cape Town.
It is easy to place ads on both sites but because Gumtree’s layout confuses users with the Adsense ads which looks exactly like their listed ads and because Gumtree is not a local company I prefer DealFish.
I surely hope that DealFish quickly grows to be more popular than their competition and I would like to wish the guys from MIH Group best of luck with their new concept.

I bumped into this site and think its better than gumtree. Have a look at http://www.howzit.co.za These guys name & shame scammers. http://www.howzit.co.za/scamonkeys
They are still new but a person get response when asking help from admin. Have a look… I love Howzit!
Oh my! Now its possible to buy drugs on dealfish. Why is this allowed?
Thank you for informing us about the scams on Dealfish, I do reassure you that the adverts are being moderated 24/7.
We have not received any of your reports, you can in future notify us about any scams by emailing us directly to info@dealfish.co.za.
Thank you for using Dealfish.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused
Kind Regards
Candace
Thanks for the reply Sharon. It really seems like the report button doesnt work. I have already reported many ads after recieving emails from the scammers. I then go back to the ad to report it, but NOTHING happens.
Yes, i am upset!
Marie
Hi, we are busy moderating on the site and these scammers work so fast that for every one we delete ten get placed. Please note that we want your experience to be the best and have success in selling or buying. All classified sites suffer this scourge and just know that moderate hourly.
Its disgusting! there are so many scammers on dealfish. i reported lots of the ads but it is still running!
That is sad news Billy. I also run a free classifieds web site and I can tell you that trying to keep the spammers and scammers out is a full time job. Sometimes I wonder if it is worth doing it.
The scams on Dealfish are insane though, to top it the link on the dealfish correspondence to report a suspected scan doesnt work. At first i thought dealfish were involved in a scam i nearly got caught in.
Oupatjie, I guess it depends what you are selling
Great article, but Dealfish needs MUCH more publicity. At least I get hits on Gumtree, none on Dealfish…
Cool, haven’t heard of DealFish before, will definitely go check it out! Thanks.
)
Great article! I agree, let’s rather support Dealfish. Local is lekka!
I agree with you. Guntree drives me nuts with all the ads. I would rather support something local. Well written article.
