I frequently
read in local magazines like "Weg" about the "Back
road to Wupperthal). Since I prefer to go off the major routes
and explore the small back roads most of the time we decided to
investigate.
We left Langebaan
early on the Saturday morning. We learned afterwards that you
need much more time for this excursion than we originally thought.
So I suggest you do not make the same mistake.
Normally you
will drive north on the N7 until you get Clanwilliam and then
go to Wupperthal from there. This is the general tourist route.
To get on
the back road you take the N7 north. About 33Km after the Citrusdal
turn-off you will get a road to the road indicating "Algeria/Cederberg".
Turn right here. This is a gravel road and the time when we used
it it was probably the worst corrugated gravel road I ever traveled
on. I suggest you stop and deflate your tyres to at least 1.8
bar. Later on in the weekend I even went down to 1.6 bar.
The scenery
definitely makes up for the road. It is difficult to keep your
eyes on the road in this area.
