July 2007 - Outside Ceres - Matroosberg Nature Reserve
For some silly reason the Cape radio stations broadcasted that
there were a lot of snow on the mountains around Ceres. So this
weekend half of Cape Town went snow watching.
We were camping
near Porterville at Laatson for the weekend when we heard
the news. So we decided to go to Ceres on Sunday and see the snow.
We left Porterville at 08h00 to be "early"
At this time of the year the Cape is absolutely beautiful. There
are water everywhere and as far as the eye can see it is green.
The photograph below was taken just outside Porterville on the
R44 towards Gouda.

Ceres was a mad house. There were hundreds of vehicles on their
way to see the snow. We stopped for some hot chocolate at a coffee
shop in Ceres and after that went on to the Matroosberg Nature
Reserve.
To get there you travel straight through Ceres on the R46. 11Km
after Ceres you will find a road sign indicating "Bo-Swaarmoed"
to the right and the brown information sign indicating "Matroosberg
Nature Reserve" on the same road. This is where you turn
right. You follow that road for 19 km. Just after the cherry farm
you will get the "Matroosberg Nature Reserve" sign again,
turn right here on the gravel road.
The next two photographs were taken on 19Km stretch of
road

Luckily for
us the gravel road were flooded and normal cars could not get
through to the nature reserve. Unfortunately for the cherry farm
all those people played in the snow inside their plantation of
blooming cherry trees.
