When we arrived at the base station there were
a lot of 4x4 vehicles waiting to go up the mountain. It was a
very profitable day for the reserve. They charged R250 per vehicle
to go up the mountain. The previous snowing weekend it was R230
per vehicle.
They sent the vehicles up in batches of 25 per
convoy. But the vehicles on the mountain first had to come down
before the others could go up. By the time we went up the convoy
was 40 vehicles big. All shapes and sizes. I think the reserve
management acted irresponsible for allowing rookies in vehicles
like Suburu Foresters to go up the mountain. There were people
in a new Pajero who never went off road before who went up. I
would rate the trail in those conditions as a severe 3.
Anyway, we did not see any accident so I presume
all went well. I guess if you charge R250 per vehicle and there
are hundreds of people begging you to go up you just see the money
and do not think about the safety of the people.

waiting to depart.

At the foot of the mountain we stopped
again to wait for the last vehicles to come down the mountain
